Get a EduVNC License

You must have a license to legally use EduVNC. If your looking to try it out before you buy we have a free trial license (see below). Most schools can license EduVNC for free just by downloading it. Simply decide which license in the table below is what you are looking for. If you later decide you need to upgrade (say from a trail that has expired to a personal license) just come back and click the corresponding link.

Pricing is based on what EduVNC considers a reasonable "donation" to support future development. At the moment licensing is done on the honesty system. The theory is that the potential liability for copyright infringement ($150,000 per copy) makes it worth while to spend the $2 per license to just be legitimate. Not imposing copy controls, product key, etc. makes it far easier to distribute the free version to those school EduVNc is designed to serve. Should it become necessary EduVNC may, in the future, make changes to either prevent wide spread copyright infringement or tack those who do and collect damages. You have been forewarned.

Download EduVNC

EduVNC comes in two versions Release which is for everyday use and a Beta version for testing new features. Almost everyone will want to get the release version. For now we are going to use the InstallEduVNC.exe installer since we are ust getting started.

Download InstallEduVNC.exe. This is the current release version (2.2.9290.5035).

Install

Installing EduVNC is designed to be fast and painless. We know you just click the 'next' button and don't really read all those dialogs so our installer just gets it done. Double chick and the install will start, agree to the licensing terms, and then it will do its thing and then show a dialog letting you know its finished. If you already had EduVNC installed and its running you'll have to exit it to upgrade. or the installer will error. When the install is complete you'll find an 'EduVNC' start menu folder. Inside will be the shortcuts to start EduVNC and to Uninstall.

Start Using

Start EduVNC using the start menu icon created by the installer and EduVNC will appear as a little green 'e' in the system tray (near the time). Double click on the 'e' to see the configuration window which should be showing the settings tab (pictured right top). Now you can setup your first service:

1. Locate the "Add New Service" button in the bottom left of the tab.
2. In the box below change control to a short one word name or leave it 'control'
3. Click the "Add New Service" button. A new tab will appear.
4. Click on new tab which has the same name you just chose

Your now looking at the service tab (pictured right bottom). This tab controls all the options that can be changed for this service. For now we are just going to setup the basics, you can look at the features page later to get an idea what all the boxes do:

1. To make it simple we won't put in any features or a password, please uncheck the check box by 'Password protect".
2. The Start button at the top right should be enabled. Click on it to start the service.
3. You can now minimize EduVNC and start your favorite web browser.
4. Browse to: http://localhost:5885 (localhost always goes to the computer your at)
5. You should see the EduVNC login page. Since we didn't set a password you can just click login.
6. You will see your desktop appear in the web browser. This creates a loop of sorts, since your desktop no has a browser with you desktop pictured inside it. Go ahead an close the browser, EduVNC is working.

To access you desktop remotely you'll need to know your computers ip address or DNS name and use that instead of localhost. Its also advisable to set a password to keep others from using your computer. More information about installing and remote access are available on the install page.
