Pricing is based on what EduVNC considers a reasonable "donation" to support future development. At the moment licensing is done on the honesty system. The theory is that the potential liability for copyright infringement ($150,000 per copy) makes it worth while to spend the $2 per license to just be legitimate. Not imposing copy controls, product key, etc. makes it far easier to distribute the free version to those school EduVNc is designed to serve. Should it become necessary EduVNC may, in the future, make changes to either prevent wide spread copyright infringement or tack those who do and collect damages. You have been forewarned.
Pricing FAQ:
Is that price per computer or for the maximum stated?
The licenses are sold in packs. One price covers up to the maximum number of computers. This means if you bought the Personal license for $10 you could use EduVNC on up to the maximum of 10 computers without additional cost. Fully utilized the effective cost would then be $1 / computer, however it is not reasonable to conduct such a small transaction. Selling licenses in packs insures that some money is generated for development after the payment processing fees are paid
What will upgrades and future versions cost?
A licenses, once purchased, covers all future versions. To upgrade simply visit the EduVNC website and download the newest release. If you later need more computers or different usage rights you will pay the current pricing less any applicable discounts. For example if you had 10 computers and a personal license you could use the latest EduVNC on all of them without any additional cost for years. If you purchased an additional computer you would need to buy an additional personal license which would cover an additional 10 computers (for a total of 20). You could then buy up to 9 more computer for no extra cost
Why do some licenses have an annual fee?
In our view businesses which are profiting in part because of this use of EduVNC should be sharing back a very small portion of those profits to improve the product. When purchased in the 25 or 250 unit packs the business pricing works out to $2/computer/year. We think any business will find that rate reasonable and affordable. Also businesses are much more likely to need to alter their licensing as the grow (where most people never have more than the 10 computers a personal license allow for). We believe a lower annual payment helps businesses keep a good return on investment that higher fixed cost licenses to. This allows business to flex the number of 25 or 250 packs they buy as they grow and shrink.
My business is to small to afford the organizational license and to spread out for the site license, what should I do?
The licenses are sold in packs, but you can purchase multiples to cover the number of computers you have. The small business and business licenses should meet your needs. The site licenses are for organizations (like private schools) with more than 500 computers at a site. For example if a organization needs 1,035 licenses spread over a large number of locations (like a few per site throughout the country) 4 business and 2 small business licenses will cover up to 1050 computers.
My business currently has a number of licenses, can we get a discount on a larger license?
Part or all of the current licenses can be exchanged to upgrade to a more expensive license. For example if your business has 4 small business licenses and is ready to grow to the point where you would be best covered by a single business license simply contact us for a discount. We will look at the both current pricing and the amount you have already paid and make a reasonable offer. In most cases, the cost for the example upgrade would be about the same as the cost for the next small business license. If you agreed you would pay and give use back the 4 small business licenses to receive the business license. This review process insures that long time customers who's original cost was lower than current pricing receive fair deal.
